B.C. Volunteer Braves Ukraine War for All Creatures Great, Small and Bizarre - Greenwood Boundary Creek Times
The team saves 30 to 60 animals per mission and has helped as many as 1,000 since Adams arrived, he said.
- Jesse Adams, co-founder of Sooke-based RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, has spent three months in Eastern Ukraine volunteering with Animal Rescue Kharkiv to evacuate animals from dangerous Donbas communities.
- Adams estimates he has helped rescue between 700 to 1,000 animals, the vast majority cats and dogs, though he has also aided unusual species including a raccoon dog named Bonya discovered in a bombed-out zoo.
- Drones and artillery shells constantly threaten their work, yet Adams says a "healthy amount of fear" keeps the team focused as Ukrainians often refuse to leave, wanting only their animals protected and relocated to safer regions.
- To extend his stay beyond the 90 days allowed for visitors, Adams is currently applying for a temporary residence permit while continuing to support RainCoast efforts on Vancouver Island.
- "I'm just going to continue to help the best I can," Adams says, driven by his Ukrainian heritage and passion for animals that ultimately motivate his commitment to remain in Ukraine.
