Sooke tech store at risk after being hit by string of break-ins

Owner Alexander Kingston says repeated break-ins, thefts and vandalism have put Gadget Tree at risk, with police responding to multiple incidents.

  • Sooke electronics repair business Gadget Tree reports about $30,000 in combined inventory loss and property damage following a wave of break-ins since early April, owner Alexander Kingston said.
  • Greg Willcocks of the RCMP confirmed police have received three calls for service related to the store, including break and enters and attempted arson, amid a broader rise in property crime.
  • Financial impacts include roughly $20,000 in stolen inventory and about $10,000 in repairs, while Kingston stated rising insurance deductibles and repeated claims create further strain on operations.
  • Despite the losses, community support has helped keep the business operating, though Kingston said the RCMP are professional but "there's just nothing they can do in some situations."
  • Long-Term outlook remains uncertain unless the pattern changes, Kingston said, adding "eventually, we're going to end up leaving Sooke" as "right now, it feels like it's getting worse.
