B.C. Serial Killer Otter Joins Beloved Island Marmot on Missing Critter List
Observers say Ollie’s health looked poor before he vanished, with a large shoulder growth, broken teeth and an uncertain prognosis.
- Ollie, a famous sea otter known as the 'Salish Sea serial killer,' has not been sighted in Greater Victoria waters since November 2025, leaving the whale-watching community without their beloved marine mammal.
- Valerie Shore, a senior naturalist at Eagle Wing Tours, reported Ollie was last seen with an 'enormous growth on his shoulder' and damaged teeth that compromised his ability to crack shells.
- Estimated to be over 12 years old, Ollie earned his 'serial killer' reputation through aggressive territorial behavior; Mollie Cameron from Sooke Coastal Explorations estimated he was responsible for at least 20 river otter deaths.
- Coincidentally, Roger, the yellow-bellied marmot at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, has also been missing since last November; Fairmont director of public relations Lisa McPhail confirmed on July 7 no official sightings yet.
- For fans of famous Greater Victoria critters, 2026 is proving difficult; Eagle Wing Tours documented approximately 15 to 20 individual sea otters passing through the Salish Sea in 2025, with higher populations on Vancouver Island.
