Somalia Appoints New Army Chief, Approves Anti-Smuggling Ministerial Committee

Mogadishu -- Somalia's Cabinet on Thursday unanimously approved the appointment of Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud as the new chief of the Somali National Army.

Somalia’s cabinet has sacked army chief General Odowa Yusuf Rage for the second time in four years, appointing Turkey-trained officer Ibrahim.

On Thursday, the Somali Council of Ministers held an extraordinary meeting in Mogadishu, presided over by Prime Minister Hon. Hamze Abdi Barre. During the meeting, it was decided that the current Army Chief, Brigadier General Odawaa Yusuf Rage, would be relieved of his duties and replaced by a young officer.
