Solberg has no regrets after WRC title near-miss: “It hurts a lot”
Solberg’s late error gave Evans the championship after a final-stage duel that left the Welshman as Britain’s first WRC champion since 2001.
On Sunday, Elfyn Evans clinched his first World Rally Championship title at Rally Italia Sardegna, becoming Britain's first world champion since 2001.
Teammate Oliver Solberg lost control two corners from the final stage finish, careering down a bank and losing the bonus points needed to hand Evans the championship.
After finishing as runner-up five times in the last six years, Evans joins Englishman Richard Burns and Scottish driver Colin McRae as the only three British winners in WRC history.
Nine-Time world champion Sebastien Ogier called Evans the "deserved champion," while Toyota sporting director Kaj Lindstrom said the team was "really happy" for him after the dramatic finale.
This victory marks the end of an era, with new technical regulations taking effect next year; final standings left Evans on 243 points, ahead of Solberg on 238 and Sami Pajari on 237.
