Solar power helps Amazon communities ditch diesel and prepare for El Niño drought
Saude e Alegria says the systems now power water pumps and homes for 36 families, reducing diesel use and preparing the village for another drought.
Last month, residents of the remote Nova Sociedade village in Brazil received individual solar-power systems donated by Schneider Electric through the nonprofit Saude e Alegria, replacing costly diesel generators.
Previously, the community relied on diesel generators requiring a three-hour boat trip to Santarem for fuel, with electricity limited and generators typically shutting down shortly after 10 p.m.
School principal Rosenilce Cruz noted the Sao Benedito School now operates 24 hours a day with fresh protein storage. Solar-powered pumps secure clean water for all 36 families in Nova Sociedade.
Solar power is also supporting local businesses; the Foundation for Amazon Sustainability and partners plan to develop 20 pilot projects over the next two to three years supporting sustainable fishing and agriculture.
Lázaro Silva, an engineering professor at the Federal University of Western Para, said strengthening traditional communities helps preserve the Amazon, where more than 80% of protected Indigenous territories recorded no deforestation this year.
For the coastal community of Nova Sociedade, deep in a protected area of the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, the Arapiuns River is the only route to the outside world.
