Solana Network Upgrade Targets Faster Blocks as SOL Price Struggles
The upgrade will raise block-production opportunities to five per second while limiting compute units per block, keeping Solana’s theoretical throughput roughly unchanged.
- On Friday, Solana moves to 200-millisecond block times, completing upgrades that halved the network's target production speed since August. The final reduction is scheduled for 15:00 UTC, according to Anza, the developer of Agave.
- The technical proposal, SIMD-0525, drove this transition, which began Aug. 21 with a move to 350 milliseconds. The change allows Solana to target five block-production opportunities every second, up from 2.5 under the original 400-millisecond configuration.
- While Blocks arrive more frequently, each carries 30 million compute units, down from 37.5 million at 250 milliseconds. This adjustment keeps theoretical processing capacity roughly unchanged, even as transactions recently became more than 3 times bigger.
- The faster clock imposes higher costs, as Validators must submit votes twice as frequently. Wallets have less time to utilize a recent blockhash, a reference used in transactions to prevent replays.
- Developers noted that the rollout depends on network conditions, specifically the rate of missed block-production opportunities. Solana Compass data indicated the previous 250-millisecond configuration delivered average slot times of approximately 266 milliseconds, slightly slower than its target.

Solana network upgrade targets faster blocks as SOL price struggles
Solana has moved closer to halving its block production time as developers prepare to activate the final stage of a network upgrade targeting 200 millisecond slots on Friday, Oct. 9. According to Anza, the developer behind Solana’s Agave validator software,…
Solana to Cut Slot Time to 200ms in Friday Upgrade
TL;DR Solana is preparing to cut its slot time from 250ms to 200ms at the epoch 1053 boundary Friday, completing a reduction from 400ms. The upgrade will target five block-production opportunities per second, while per-block compute limits fall to 30 million units so processing capacity remains unchanged. Shorter slots improve latency and reduce validator control ...
