Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time
Gallup said support for socialism has risen 7 points since 2010, while views of big business and capitalism have declined.
- Gallup's survey conducted Aug. 3-24 found 43% of Americans view socialism positively, the highest share since tracking began in 2010, up from 39% a year ago.
- Market-Oriented concepts have lost ground over 15 years, with big business support declining 14 percentage points, free enterprise by nine and capitalism by six since 2010.
- Political independents entirely drove this year's increase, jumping from 37% favorable to 45%, while their support for big business collapsed to a record low of 32%.
- Adults aged 18 to 34 favor socialism over capitalism , while those 55 and older strongly prefer capitalism ; Democrats now rate socialism equal to free enterprise at 65%, surpassing capitalism at 35%.
- Despite gains, socialism still trails capitalism and free enterprise in overall favorability, though 70% of respondents in a Data for Progress survey said the economic system is rigged in favor of corporations and the wealthy.
