Socceroo makes long-awaited A-League Men return
The 30-year-old forward signed a three-year deal and will become one of the faces of the A-Leagues, City said.
- On Thursday, veteran Socceroos attacker Awer Mabil signed a three-year deal with Melbourne City, returning to the A-Leagues after 11 years playing professionally across Denmark, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
- Mabil, a former refugee who immigrated to South Australia as a 10-year-old, brings significant experience to the club, having earned 39 caps and competed at two FIFA World Cups.
- Football director Michael Petrillo praised the signing, stating, "Awer is one of Australia's most accomplished footballers and we're incredibly excited to welcome him to Melbourne City." Petrillo noted his community impact.
- The 30-year-old forward arrives next week to join City's preseason ahead of the season-opener in Auckland on October 17 and the first Melbourne Derby against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on October 24.
- Mabil's return follows Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine's move to Cerezo Osaka on Wednesday, with Irvine stating, "I'm incredibly excited to be coming to the hottest football nation in the world.
