Sturgeon wishes she had not kept Murrell on as SNP chief executive
She said some National Executive Committee members failed to scrutinise the accounts as questions grew after Peter Murrell admitted embezzling £400,000.
On Friday, Nicola Sturgeon denied suppressing scrutiny of SNP finances at the Hay Festival in Wales, speaking four days after her estranged husband Peter Murrell pleaded guilty to embezzling over £400,000.
Murrell admitted embezzling funds over 12 years for luxury items including a motorhome, two cars, and a £1,200 space telescope; Sturgeon stated she was unaware of embezzlement issues until 2023.
Critics including former SNP MP Joanna Cherry alleged they were called "traitors" for raising financial concerns, while Sturgeon rejected these claims and accused some National Executive Committee members of failing to do their "job properly of scrutinising the accounts."
Sturgeon described the embezzlement as "deeply painful" but rejected personal responsibility for Murrell's crimes, asserting she is now "able to speak" after three years of silence during the police investigation.
The SNP has faced calls for an independent inquiry into its finances following the guilty plea, with Sturgeon continuing to face skepticism about her knowledge of accounts during her leadership from 2014 to 2023.
