SNP MSP breaks with Scottish Government on Jackdaw and Rosebank
Jack Middleton says the projects would create thousands of jobs and boost Scotland’s economy as 2,000 supporters back the campaign.
On Tuesday, SNP MSP Jack Middleton broke with his party, explicitly calling on the UK Government to approve the stalled Jackdaw and Rosebank North Sea oil and gas developments to support Scottish jobs and energy security.
The call follows the UK Government's delay of the projects, whose previous permits were voided last year by the Court of Session, and arrives after the SNP's recent defeat in the Aberdeen South by-election.
Middleton argued that domestic production reduces reliance on Middle East imports, claiming "Jackdaw and Rosebank would not only create thousands of Scottish jobs" and boost local economies.
Labour MPs including Graeme Downie and Richard Baker have joined the call, though Energy Secretary Ed Miliband faces pressure to reject the applications under the promised Energy Independence Bill despite internal party divisions.
While the Scottish Government maintains that new projects must pass "climate compatibility tests," tensions persist over balancing the transition to renewables with the economic importance of the North Sea oil sector.
