Snowplows Come Out After Hail Buries Kansas City Airport Taxiways
Up to 3 inches of hail buried taxiways and shut down the self-service fuel tank until power is restored, airport officials said.
On Wednesday, snow removal crews mobilized at Wheeler Downtown Airport to clear taxiways buried under hail following an early morning summer storm.
A severe summer storm dumped up to 3 inches of hail on Wheeler Downtown Airport during the heat of August, an unusually icy event for the season.
Airport officials posted on Facebook, "Who would have thought our snow crews would have to do snow removal in August?" capturing the unusual nature of the event.
Destruction of a utility pole knocked out power to the facility, forcing the airport to suspend operations of its self-service fuel tank immediately.
Utility provider Evergy is actively working to restore electricity to the facility, though fuel operations will remain suspended until power is fully restored.
