Snow squall watch and blowing snow advisory in effect in Waterloo Region
Warnings include snow squalls with up to 15 cm accumulation and gusts reaching 50 km/h, causing hazardous travel and prompting school bus cancellations, Environment Canada said.
- On Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a yellow-level snow squall warning for Waterloo region, warning that travel will likely be hazardous with sudden near-zero visibility at times.
- Squalls developing off Lake Huron are expected to impact the area through tonight with peak snowfall rates up to 5 centimetres per hour and accumulations of 5 to 15 centimetres, Environment Canada said.
- The national forecaster warned that Environment Canada said `Southwesterly winds gusting 50 to 70 km/h will result in blowing and drifting snow` as Ontario Provincial Police reported more than 200 crashes and whiteout conditions blocked Highway 401.
- Despite the warnings, buses operated and schools stayed open in Waterloo region, Guelph, and southern Wellington County while the Region of Waterloo opened warming spaces and some boards closed Monday.
- Environment Canada expects squalls to continue into the evening and through the week, with January 2026 on track to be the snowiest month since 1937.
