Smyrna Man Faces Numerous Animal Cruelty Charges After 19 Dogs Rescued
Robert J. O'Neill is accused of keeping 19 dogs in filthy conditions and violating bail terms that barred him from owning animals.
Delaware authorities charged Robert J. O'Neill, 57, with 19 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty following the rescue of 19 dogs from his Smyrna home earlier this month.
O'Neill was on bail for a previous animal cruelty charge, with release conditions strictly prohibiting him from possessing any animals.
During a June 4 search warrant, Delaware Animal Services officers found 17 puppies and 2 adult dogs living in filthy conditions within mobile trailers and a shed.
Released pending trial, O'Neill remains prohibited from possessing animals, while the Brandywine Valley SPCA reports the intake of 19 dogs is straining shelter resources.
To report suspected animal cruelty, contact Delaware Animal Services at 255-4646, or visit any of the four BVSPCA locations to foster or adopt pets.
