Smotherman has career-low 62 and takes a one-shot lead in Bank of Utah Championship
Smotherman made 10 birdies to match his PGA Tour career low and build a 17-under total after 36 holes.
On Friday, Austin Smotherman carded a 9-under 62 at the Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah, to take a one-stroke lead halfway through the Bank of Utah Championship. He made 10 birdies to match his lowest round of his PGA Tour career.
The Bank of Utah Championship is the second of eight tournaments in the FedEx Cup Fall, where the top 100 in standings retain full cards for next year. The top 60 qualify for $20 million signature events at Pebble Beach and Riviera.
Kevin Roy trails by one stroke after posting a 63, while Doug Ghim and Kevin Streelman sit two shots back. Smotherman, playing in his 100th PGA Tour event, seeks his first professional victory.
Jackson Koivun secured his weekend spot by finishing at 6-under 136 to make the cut. Notable players including Tony Finau, Cam Davis, Maverick McNealy, Lucas Glover, Max Greyserman, and Zach Johnson are in line to miss the cut.
Smotherman seeks his first PGA Tour victory to gain access to the first two signature events of 2027. Streelman, playing on a medical exemption, said, "I feel like I have nothing to lose, really," as he competes for a stronger standing.
