Residents Say They Are 'Struggling to Breathe' as Thick Smoke Blankets City
Crews are battling the blaze after about 220 hectares burned, while wind carried the smoke east into Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
Crews from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service continued battling a 400-hectare wildfire near Llangynidr Reservoir on Tuesday, which has burned since Friday, August 7.
The blaze, which began Friday, August 7, near Ebbw Vale, escalated into a major incident by Saturday night. Firefighters deployed helicopters and off-road vehicles to manage the widespread fire that has persisted for several days.
Smoke from the fire has traveled nearly 100 miles, affecting residents as far away as Oxfordshire and Worcester. Public Health Wales advised, "stay indoors where possible and keep windows and doors closed" to minimize health impacts.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported receiving multiple calls, urging the public to "call 999 immediately" only for active fires. Residents in Blaenavon and Newport reported significant haze and throat irritation from the drifting smoke.
Firefighters expect to remain at the scene for several more days as a multi-agency Tactical Coordination Group manages the response. Road closures remain in place while officials monitor conditions to minimize impacts on local communities and the environment.
