Small Plane Crashes on Psychiatric Hospital Campus Near North Perry Airport; 2 Hospitalized
Two people were injured and remained conscious after the Cessna C172P crashed shortly after departing North Perry Airport, officials said.
A Cessna C172P crashed on the grounds of South Florida State Hospital in Pembroke Pines on Friday, May 29, 2026, shortly after departing North Perry Airport, with two occupants transported to Memorial Regional Hospital.
Pembroke Pines Mayor Angelo Castillo criticized the frequency of accidents at the facility, noting about 40 crashes in the past five years involving planes from North Perry Airport and its 11 flight schools.
Castillo described the sequence: the plane experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff, struck a tree, and flipped over near 800 E. Cypress Drive, though occupants were "conscious and breathing" when emergency crews arrived.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash as standard procedure. Records identify the aircraft as registered to Trajectory Aviation LLC, operated by Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Jay Schwartz.
With 33 crashes recorded at North Perry Airport between 2019 and 2024, Broward County is hiring a consultant to evaluate air safety. Castillo stated, "If they can't make it safer, they need to close it down.
