Small earthquake felt across the Okanagan
No damage was reported after the magnitude 2.9 quake, and officials said the Okanagan region has few earthquakes but remains seismically active.
- A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck 20 kilometres east-northeast of Okanagan Falls at 11:17 p.m. on Tuesday, with residents from Kelowna to Osoyoos reporting mild shaking and no damage reported.
- Earthquakes in the Okanagan are rare but caused by tectonic plate movement on the West Coast, with pressure transferring through North America to reactivate older faults studied at UBC Okanagan.
- The region's largest recorded earthquake measured 4.6 near Vernon in 1936, while a 3.8 magnitude quake struck south of Kelowna in November 2025 and a 1.7 magnitude tremor hit the same area on Aug. 15.
- Although earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 3.5 are "recorded on local seismographs, but generally not felt," Earthquakes Canada noted this event prompted community intensity reports across the region.
- Some Penticton residents posted about a rumble on social media late Tuesday. John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, said the event reminds residents the region remains seismically active.
