King County Council Demands Assessor Resign over Stalking Charges
Council members cited stalking charges and repeated court-order violations as they said Wilson’s conduct has damaged public trust and resident safety.
- On Tuesday, the Metropolitan King County Council unanimously voted for the second time to demand the immediate resignation of King County Assessor John Wilson, citing ongoing criminal charges and alleged disregard for resident safety.
- Wilson faces two misdemeanor charges for violating a no-contact order involving his ex-fiancée, with a court mandate requiring him to remain 1,000 feet away from her. The King County Superior Court issued a protection order following repeated stalking and harassment allegations.
- Calling for his resignation on Wednesday, Al Dams—Wilson's chief deputy for 11 years—stated the assessor's situation is "impacting the morale of the department." Dams emphasized he must prioritize the department and King County taxpayers.
- Wilson's attorney, John Polito, denied the assessor is distracted, noting he continues meeting constituents and providing property tax relief. Wilson faced criticism after allegedly taunting the court by posting social media photos while removing his court-ordered ankle monitor.
- Neither the council nor Dams possesses the official authority to remove the assessor from office. Other candidates, including Rob Foxcurran, have joined calls for Wilson to step down before his term ends.
