Could all Syrians return to their homeland? Yes, Chancellor Merz says. Foreign Minister Wadephul does not seem so sure after a visit to Syria. Criticism comes from the SPD, the Greens are convinced that the country lacks the necessary infrastructure after the war - also for the reception of criminals.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated for months that the civil war in Syria has ended, so there is no reason to agree with the Syrian migrants who came to Germany. The Chancellor's statement appears to contradict his foreign minister Johann Wadepul, who expressed doubts about the Syrian might return to their country in the near future, given the destruction caused by the war.
Wadephul said that the mass return of Syrians is not to be thought of at the moment. In the Union parties CDU and CSU there is great displeasure, because they had promised the Germans exactly that.
