Six police officers sacked after racism complaint in Manchester
The panel found a culture of mocking accents and racist comments, and all eight officers were barred from policing after the hearing.
- Greater Manchester Police sacked six serving officers after a disciplinary panel found they committed gross misconduct. The officers were dismissed without notice following an internal investigation into racist discrimination against a colleague.
- The investigation began in July 2024 after an officer of African heritage reported colleagues mimicked her accent, compared her to a suspect, and made derogatory comments about her hair. The panel concluded the officers breached professional standards regarding respect and equality.
- Eight officers and former officers committed gross misconduct, including former PC Jake Holt and another unidentified former officer. All eight were added to the College of Policing Barred List, while Sergeant Adrian Bick received a written warning.
- Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods stated, "No officer or member of staff should have to come to work and experience discriminatory behaviour from the people they serve alongside." Woods emphasized the importance of victims speaking up and receiving support.
- Since the investigation, the Bury district has worked closely with community representatives to listen to concerns and take action. Woods noted these relationships are vital to ensure GMP remains a police service diverse communities can identify with and be proud of.
