Six Killed in Algeria Forest Fires: Interior Ministry
Authorities said 1,460 wildfires have been recorded since early July as crews work to stop remaining blazes and assess damage for compensation.
- On Tuesday, the Algerian Ministry announced six deaths from wildfires sweeping across the North African country. Rescue teams evacuated more than 100 injured people from Seraidi Hospital in Annaba province on Wednesday after fires reached the hospital's perimeter.
- A prolonged heatwave continues to fuel forest fires across Algeria, with 3,719 wildfires recorded since May. This total significantly exceeds the 1,501 fires reported during the same period last year, according to Civil Protection Department spokesperson Nassim Bernaoui.
- The General Directorate of Forests reports that fires have destroyed more than 1,666 hectares of vegetation, compared to 467 hectares in 2025. Civil Protection teams have now contained between 85 and 90 percent of the active blazes.
- Interior Minister Sayoud visited affected areas and confirmed patients were transferred to Bouni Hospital. The ministry has ordered an assessment of the damage in preparation for compensating those affected.
- Firefighting efforts remain underway to extinguish remaining blazes in provinces including Bejaia, Guelma, Tarf, Khenchela, Mila, Bouira, Medea, and Mascara. Authorities are working to prevent further spread across these regions.
