Cocoa, Berries Found to Protect Heart Health During Long Sits
A study found flavanol-rich foods like cocoa and berries maintain arterial elasticity during two hours of sitting, benefiting people regardless of fitness levels.
- On Oct. 29, a study in The Journal of Physiology found flavanol-rich foods and drinks like cocoa, tea, apples, and berries might protect against blood vessel problems from prolonged sitting independently of fitness.
- Because prolonged sitting reduces artery flexibility, Catarina Rendeiro warned `Whether we are sitting at desks, behind the wheel of a car, on a train, or on the sofa reading a book or watching TV, we all spend a lot of time seated` and added `Even though we are not moving our bodies, we are still putting them under stress.`
- To test effects, researchers recruited 40 healthy young men and found that after a high-flavanol drink, arterial elasticity stayed stable during two hours of sitting.
- With supermarket options available, Daniele suggested accessible choices, noting `There are cocoa products available in supermarkets and health stores which are processed through methods that preserve flavanol levels` and adding `If cocoa isn't your thing, fruits like apples, plums and berries, nuts, and black and green tea are all common kitchen staples and are readily available.`
- Evidence suggests flavanols have broader vascular benefits, occurring naturally in fruits, tea, nuts and cocoa, and Harvard Medical School offers additional information on flavonoids for context.
