- Authorities flagged Rao for a "self-name mismatch," as current rolls record his title as "Proff" instead of "Prof." This discrepancy occurs when current enrollment details fail to match the 2002 electoral roll, triggering mandatory identity verification hearings.
- Rao must appear in Malleshwaram near the Indian Institute of Science for the hearing. Acquaintances at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research noted they were unaware of the notice until contacted by The Hindu.
- Economist Amartya Sen also faced a similar spelling discrepancy notice during the revision. Unlike Rao, the Election Commission exempted Sen from appearing personally, creating disparity in the verification process.
- Karnataka is among 19 states conducting this third phase of SIR, which has excluded 19.4% of the electorate. While the Supreme Court upheld the revision's legality, concerns persist that the process may eliminate genuine voters.
