- On Tuesday, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced in Parliament that the government accepted recommendations to raise the entry-level ministerial salary benchmark to $1.8 million from $1.1 million, effective October 15, alongside increasing MP monthly allowances to $18,500 from $13,750.
- The adjustment reflects inflation since the last review in 2012, while ministerial pay remains benchmarked to the median income of the top 1,000 Singaporean earners, discounted by 40 per cent to reflect the ethos of political service.
- Officials will receive a one-off 9% adjustment rather than immediately hitting the $1.8 million benchmark; "thereafter, there will be no further special adjustments," Wong said, adding that subsequent changes will be based on individual performance and responsibilities.
- To demonstrate his commitment to the revised structure, Prime Minister Wong pledged to donate his full annual increment of $1.4 million to "suitable good causes" for the next five years.
- Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing noted the government will study "delinking" allowances for community-related roles, such as MPs and mayors, from political salary benchmarks, citing differing considerations for those roles.
