Hassett: 'We Will Never Know What the Unemployment Rate Was in October'
The October employment report will include payroll data but omit the unemployment rate due to halted household survey during the 43-day government shutdown, officials said.
- The White House announced that the October jobs report will be released without a reading of the unemployment rate, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said on Thursday, November 13, as federal agencies resumed work after the shutdown ended.
- The government shutdown paused multiple data releases, including the October report originally scheduled for November 7 and figures on consumer inflation and retail sales while workers were furloughed.
- The report rests on two surveys and, while payroll figures for October can still be tabulated, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said the household survey wasn’t conducted, producing `half the employment report` and leaving the unemployment rate unknowable.
- Officials signaled immediate follow-ups as agencies resume work, with Kevin Hassett saying the September jobs report could be released next week amid affordability concerns.
- Because data collection stopped during the shutdown, retroactive reconstruction for October's household data is difficult as statistical agencies slowly resume and BLS may update its release schedule soon amid prior tensions, including the August firing of Erika McEntarfer, former BLS Commissioner.
