Showaddywaddy Co-Founder Dies as Bandmates Pay Tribute

Trevor Oakes co-founded Showaddywaddy, known for 10 Top 10 singles including the 1976 No.1 hit Under The Moon of Love, and retired in 2009 due to health issues.

  • Trevor Oakes, guitarist and founding member of English pop group Showaddywaddy, has died at 79 following a long illness. The Leicester-based band announced his passing last month.
  • Formed in Leicester in the Seventies, Showaddywaddy emerged from the merger of two local bands, Choise and The Golden Hammers. The original eight-member line-up included Oakes as guitarist and primary songwriter.
  • Showaddywaddy achieved significant chart success, spending 209 weeks on the Singles Chart with ten top ten singles. Their number one hit Under The Moon of Love became a defining Seventies revival classic.
  • Former frontman and current manager Dave Bartram paid tribute, saying, "Trevor was a unique character and a dedicated professional." He noted the guitarist will be sadly missed by those dear to him.
  • Oakes retired from performing at age 62 due to health problems in 2009. Outside music, he fathered professional footballers Scott, who played more than 170 times for Luton Town, and Steffan Oakes of Leicester City.
