Shoplifter killed Asda security guard during struggle over alcohol in Arbroath

Natasha Smith admitted causing a fatal heart attack to security guard Alun Harris-Richards during a theft of alcohol and assault on staff, court heard.

  • On June 30, 2024, Natasha Smith admitted causing the death of Asda security guard Alun Harris-Richards, 61, former Royal Marine, who was pronounced dead at the Arbroath store.

  • Ahead of a 5 March hearing, the judge adjourned sentencing for a background report, ordered Smith to remain remanded in prison, and warned only a "significant custodial sentence" is possible.
  • Pathologists reported Mr Harris-Richards had a coronary artery condition, putting him at risk of sudden death, and Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kelly said it was `a shocking and tragic incident which resulted in the death of a man at his workplace`.
