Suspect in DeKalb County shooting spree found dead in jail cell, sheriff's office says
Authorities said no foul play is suspected and an internal review is underway after the 26-year-old Navy veteran died in custody.
- On Tuesday night, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old Navy veteran accused in a fatal Atlanta-area shooting spree, died in his DeKalb County Jail cell. Officials performed lifesaving measures but pronounced him dead at 7:17 p.m.
- Authorities held Abel in connection with a shooting spree that killed three people, including Department of Homeland Security employee Lauren Bullis, Prianna Weathers, and Tony Mathews, who died Sunday from injuries sustained in the attack.
- In accordance with agency policy, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office initiated a standard internal review. Sheriff Melody Maddox confirmed that officials see "no indication of criminal activity or foul play" at this time.
- Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin previously raised concerns about Abel's 2022 U.S. citizenship, granted while Democrat Joe Biden was president, and cataloged a series of Abel's alleged crimes following the attacks.
- Community members recently held a vigil to honor the victims as the investigation into Abel's death continues. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the official cause of death.
