Innocent Woman Killed at Gas Station After Suspects Fire up to 80 Shots Into Car, Police Say
Police said two suspects in dark clothing fired AR-style pistols into a parked gray sedan, killing an unidentified woman.
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, Hammond police responded to a fatal shooting at a Chevron on Highway 190 West where 50-year-old Patricia Shepard was killed around 1:15 a.m.
Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron said the suspects used a vehicle stolen from McComb, Mississippi, on Tuesday and mistakenly targeted Shepard, calling her an "absolutely innocent victim."
Surveillance footage shows two suspects armed with what appeared to be "AR-style pistols" firing 70 to 80 shots before fleeing westbound on Highway 190 toward Interstate 55.
Detective Dustin Williams with the Hammond Police Department Criminal Investigations Division is pursuing two to three suspects; authorities urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa.
Local resident Terrence Selders said the violence makes it "difficult that you just dont want to come out, especially at night," while Chief Bergeron condemned the suspects as "trash bags that are destroying communities.
