Four ships carrying Iranian oil leave Gulf despite US blockade, monitor shows

Shipowners are using quiet Navy coordination to move vessels through Hormuz as traffic stays far below prewar levels, Lloyd's List said.

  • Four Iranian-flagged oil tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday with their AIS transponders turned off, marking the first transit since the United States blockade of Iranian ports began in mid-April.
  • Maritime tracking firm Kpler detected the Hilda I, the Amber, the Silvia 1, and the Happiness I carrying a total of seven million barrels of oil, all loaded in mid-April at Kharg Island, through which 90 percent of the Islamic Republic's crude normally transits.
  • The tankers typically transport Iranian crude to offshore areas near Malaysia and Singapore, where they conduct ship-to-ship transfers of cargo often destined for China, evading direct sanctions enforcement.
  • To circumvent international sanctions, Tehran adopted the practice of disabling AIS transponders, allowing the tankers to defy the United States blockade that had halted their operations since mid-April.
  • The United States military regularly announces enforcement actions against tankers attempting to violate the blockade, with Washington recently disabling an oil tanker by firing on its engine room on Tuesday to prevent Iranian crude from reaching international markets.
