Shipley: Vikings have done well with second-life veteran quarterbacks
Minnesota has found value in veteran quarterbacks, with Sam Darnold winning 14 games and Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson later reaching the Super Bowl.
In March, Minnesota signed veteran signal-caller Kyler Murray for the 2026 season. The 29-year-old enters with more than 20,000 yards and 121 touchdowns passing.
The Vikings have historically found success with veteran quarterbacks starting a second act. Randall Cunningham, Brett Favre, and Case Keenum all led Minnesota to championship games.
After signing Sam Darnold to a one-year deal for 2025, the Vikings won 14 games. The team moved on from McCarthy, who struggled with injuries and effectiveness.
Following a 9-8 season, a neutral NFL observer predicts a playoff appearance for the Vikings. Murray should make the offense better with one of the NFL's best receiver groups.
Minnesota aims to reach the Super Bowl, previously achieved by former Vikings quarterbacks Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson. The team hopes Murray becomes the right piece at the right time.
