PRIVACY ALERT: Abbott Laboratories and Exact Sciences Corporation Under Investigation for Data Breach of Patient Records
ShinyHunters says it stole millions of medical records and more than 1 million Social Security numbers, as Abbott negotiates a ransom demand.
- On Thursday, Illinois-based healthcare giant Abbott Laboratories and subsidiary Exact Sciences Corporation confirmed an investigation into two separate cyberattacks. Threat actors ShinyHunters and The ShadowByt3 allegedly breached systems, with ransom negotiations reportedly underway.
- ShinyHunters operatives told BleepingComputer they gained access to a corporate Microsoft Entra SSO account following a successful vishing attack on one employee. This breach targeted IT systems within Abbott's Cancer Diagnostics department, compromising legacy systems from Exact Sciences.
- Data claims include 22 million doctor-patient notes, over 20 million medical orders, and one million Social Security numbers. While Abbott investigates, the group threatened to release files unless the company pays a ransom.
- Separately, The ShadowByt3 collective accessed Abbott's LabCentral portal, pulling sensitive technical documentation, though no customer data was stolen. Law firm Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP is investigating the breach for potential class action litigation.
- Abbott and Exact Sciences have not yet begun notifying affected individuals, a delay potentially violating state and federal laws. Ransom negotiations with ShinyHunters reportedly continue, with the group having shifted its deadline for releasing stolen files to July 21.
