Sherri Shepherd to Join Broadway’s ‘Aladdin’ as the Genie, and She’s ‘Beyond Thrilled’ – WTOP News

Shepherd will become the first woman to play the Genie and perform through Jan. 3, 2027, producers said.

  • On Friday, October 16, talk show host Sherri Shepherd will make a rare Broadway appearance as the Genie in Disney's Aladdin, becoming the first woman to play the role through January 3, 2027.
  • Disney's Aladdin, a musical adaptation of the 1992 movie, opened on Broadway in 2014 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Shepherd, a Daytime Emmy Award-winning host of The View and Sherri, previously performed on Broadway in 2014 as the Evil Stepmother in Cinderella.
  • Preparing for the role, Shepherd is taking dance and voice lessons while consulting Broadway friends including Kristin Chenoweth, Wayne Brady, and Steven Boyer. She is learning the signature song, "Friend Like Me," which earned James Monroe Iglehart a Tony Award in 2014.
  • "To step on that stage as the first woman to ever play the Genie is something I don't take lightly," Shepherd said. She hopes to inspire children, stating, "I want the little girls to say, 'Oh I know I used to dress as a princess, but I could be the Genie.'"
  • Disney Theatrical Group's Andrew Flatt and Anne Quart called Shepherd the "perfect entertainer to play the life force that is the Genie," with her limited run continuing through the holiday season until January 3, 2027.
