Shein could face EU investigation but no interim measure, commission official says
The European Commission uses the Digital Services Act to seek documents from Shein amid concerns over illegal products, risking fines up to 6% of global revenue, officials said.
- On Jan 27, the European Commission said it has asked Shein, Chinese fast-fashion online retailer, for documents under the Digital Services Act but said a website suspension is unlikely.
- In November last year, Shein was flagged after childlike sex dolls and illegal products sold in France raised systemic risks across the 27-country European Union.
- Against a backdrop of probes into marketplaces, Yinan Zhu, Shein's general counsel for Europe, Middle East and Africa, told EU lawmakers on Tuesday that the company removed illegal products while bad actors exploit multiple platforms, citing investigations into Alibaba's AliExpress and charges against Temu last year.
- Rita Wezenbeek said the decision rests with Henna Virkkunen, noting large online companies face fines up to 6 per cent of global revenues for DSA breaches.
- The Commission signalled it wants to move quickly, with Rita Wezenbeek saying she had been urged by Henna Virkkunen to act very swiftly and that `We want to apply the same speed with respect to Shein.
