Corry Man Sentenced in Killing of Amish Woman, Unborn Child
SPARTA TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, JUL 28 – Shawn Cranston was convicted of murdering a pregnant Amish woman during a burglary and sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole, officials said.
- On February 26, 2024, Shawn Cranston from Corry broke into the home of Rebekah Byler in Sparta Township, where he fatally attacked her and her unborn baby in the presence of her two young children.
- Cranston targeted the home for burglary expecting it to be empty, but encountered Byler inside, leading to a violent encounter involving stabbing and shooting.
- Evidence included Cranston’s DNA on a glove fragment, shoe prints matching his sneakers, vehicle tire treads, and GPS data placing him at the Byler residence; a prison inmate testified Cranston confessed the crime.
- After a four-day trial concluding on June 12, 2024, a jury found Cranston guilty of first-degree murder for Rebekah Byler’s death, second-degree murder related to her unborn child, as well as first-degree burglary and first-degree criminal trespass.
- On Monday, a judge sentenced Cranston to two consecutive life terms without parole and ordered fines, while Attorney General Sunday called the act truly evil and commended all involved in securing justice.
