Sharpsmart strengthens NHS waste service resilience and greener logistics in Normanton
The upgrade adds more than 23,000 ft2 of operational space and 11 electric vehicle charge points to improve resilience and lower-carbon logistics.
Sharpsmart completed a major improvement project at its Normanton Plant, adding more than 23,000 ft2 of usable operational space and strengthening one of its key UK sites supporting safe, reliable healthcare waste services for NHS and private customers.
Before the works, the Normanton Plant rear yard suffered from poor drainage, flooding, and limited usable space, making vehicle movement difficult. Sharpsmart initiated the project to improve resilience as demand for healthcare waste services grew.
Construction included underground drainage and water management systems, plus 11 electric vehicle charge points and a twin-cable 80 kW DC fast-charging solution. The project was completed in approximately six and a half weeks.
With upgraded fencing and electric gates operated by driver PDAs and swipe cards, vehicles can now move through the depot more efficiently. Dameon Ward, Sharpsmart's national engineering manager, said the project was "never just about creating more yard space."
Following the development, Sharpsmart worked with ecology specialists to support biodiversity offsetting, including planting and long-term maintenance arrangements. The project reflects the company's commitment to building safer, more sustainable healthcare waste infrastructure across the UK.
