'Trust Is Key': Crackdown on Migration Lawyers Launched
The plan would bar agents from futile applications and use a Home Affairs taskforce to disrupt online fraud and penalize fake advisers.
On Friday, Assistant Citizenship Minister Julian Hill announced a crackdown on "rogue" migration agents and lawyers, proposing code of conduct changes banning assistance with applications lacking factual or legal basis.
Hill condemned professionals selling "false hope" to vulnerable clients and coaching them to falsely claim persecution or sexuality for protection visas, describing the practice as a "misuse of the migration system for profit."
A dedicated Department of Home Affairs taskforce will target "fake agents" using administrative penalties to disrupt online fraud, while about 1700 unrestricted legal practitioners now fall under state and territory regulation, creating a regulatory gap.
New student visa restrictions effective today curb onshore "visa hopping," limit course transfers, and bar international students from bringing family members to Australia, enforcing stricter visa expiry compliance.
These measures aim to reach net overseas migration targets of 245,000 this year and 225,000 next financial year, responding to housing pressures amid political pressure from One Nation and a flagging Coalition.
To reduce the number of immigrants to Australia, the Australian government will crack down on immigration lawyers and agents who profit by exploiting loopholes in the immigration system to help others file baseless and almost hopeless visa and asylum applications.
