Police Warn Back-to-School Photos Have Hidden Clues for Predators: What to Check For
Police said school, teacher and bus stop details in back-to-school photos can help strangers locate children and may be misused in sextortion cases.
- The San Antonio Police Department warned parents that posting 'whiteboard' back-to-school photos on social media could inadvertently put children's safety at risk by revealing their school, teacher, or bus stop location to criminals.
- Strangers can exploit 'getting to know you' details like favorite pets or foods from first-day signs to build false trust with children. SAPD spokesperson Camelia Juarez said this makes children think, 'Well, they know me,' potentially aiding predators.
- Child Rescue Coalition CEO Greg Schiller warned that background photos allow strangers to discover home addresses using reverse Google image searches. Schiller emphasized that anytime information enters the public social sphere, it is dangerous.
- AI technologies allow predators to easily create sexualized images of children from publicly shared photos, Schiller said. These images can increase predator interest in specific children or be used for blackmail in sextortion cases.
- While taking first-day photos is a time-honored tradition spanning decades, Schiller emphasized that putting information about children into the public ether is dangerous. Parents should take necessary precautions to ensure their children's safety.
