Iran was accepted as an observer member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in June 2005 and, after 16 years of waiting, became a full member with voting rights at the organization's summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in September 2021. This was Iran's first experience in joining a defense-security treaty four decades after Iran withdrew from the CENTO defense treaty between Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan in March 1979.
