Macron to Recognize Palestine at UN General Assembly in September
FRANCE, JUL 25 – France will become the first major Western nation to recognize Palestine, aiming to support peace and pressure Israel amid a Gaza crisis with over 59,000 deaths, officials said.
- On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France will recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, as the first major Western power, in a letter to Mahmoud Abbas.
- Earlier this week, France and over two dozen European countries condemned Israel’s aid restrictions and killings, as Macron had considered recognition for months to keep the two-state solution alive.
- Aid groups report that mass starvation is now widespread, and more than 1,000 Gazans have been shot dead while seeking food, according to Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Oxfam and others.
- In Washington, senior officials called it `a reckless decision that only serves Hamas propaganda`, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it `slaps victims of October 7th`.
- The upcoming ministerial meeting will occur on July 28-29, followed by a heads-of-state event at the UNGA in September, potentially encouraging other countries to follow suit.
