Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Wins Second Straight NBA MVP Award
On Sunday, ESPN reported that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award, making the Hamilton, Ont., native the 14th player in history to achieve this feat.
Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder to a league-best 64-18 record this season, securing a second straight 60-plus win campaign despite missing star forward Jalen Williams for 33 games due to wrist injury.
The 27-year-old averaged 31.1 points while shooting 55.3 per cent from the field, marking his fourth straight year averaging over 30 points and extending his active streak of consecutive 20-point performances to 140 games.
Voters selected Gilgeous-Alexander over finalists Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, who also led the league in clutch scoring with 6.5 clutch points per game.
The Thunder face the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals starting Monday night, aiming to become the first team to go back-to-back since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
