Sexual assault charity to exclude trans survivors from single-sex service
SUSSEX, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 30 – Survivors Network will pilot a 12-month cisgender women-only support group after a legal challenge, excluding trans and non-binary survivors following a UK Supreme Court ruling.
- Earlier this year, Survivors Network in Sussex announced a new single-sex service that excludes trans women and non-binary survivors following a UK Supreme Court ruling on biological sex.
- Following discomfort in mixed sessions, Sarah Surviving sued Survivors Network in 2022 after feeling unsafe discussing her abuse in front of a trans woman, settling out of court before the September trial.
- With a 12-month pilot scheme funded by the Office of Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Sarah Surviving wrote, `'This is the best possible outcome for sexual violence survivors in our city'`.
- The charity clarified that the new group will be an additional option and excludes trans men, trans women, and non-binary people, while existing inclusive meetings remain available.
- This decision aligns with other post-ruling measures, such as university toilet rules, the FA’s ban on trans women and police strip-search guidance, following a series of trans-exclusive policies since the UK Supreme Court ruling.
