Environment Canada Confirms Tornado in London, Ont., Reports One Death Following Severe Storm in Huntsville
Researchers said the tornado struck Derwent after severe thunderstorms, while a separate storm east of London produced 145 km/h winds.
On Tuesday, researchers confirmed a tornado touched down in Derwent, southeast of London, Ont. The Northern Tornadoes Project provided "necessary evidence" of the twister through radar data and videos.
Following severe thunderstorms earlier this week, the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University launched an investigation Wednesday into the storm's track and intensity.
During the warning on Tuesday afternoon, Western University's special constable service manually activated a campus-wide weather siren. Bill Chantler, the university's director of campus safety and emergency services, said the device alerts people outdoors.
Chantler explained that the siren supplements digital alerts sent via SMS and apps. It ensures students and community members receive quick notification when they might not see electronic messages while outdoors.
Separate damage east of London was caused by an EF1 downburst with gusts up to 145 km/h, the Project noted. Director Dave Sills reported that damage from the week's storms remains minimal.
