Serving Met officer and four ex-officers investigated for handling of Al Fayed allegations
The watchdog says the probe covers possible misconduct and missed opportunities as more than 400 allegations against the former Harrods owner have emerged.
- One serving Metropolitan Police officer and four former colleagues are under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct over their handling of sexual abuse allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed, the late Harrods owner who died in 2023.
- Following complaints from four victim-survivors, the IOPC began a directed investigation in January 2025 into whether officers mishandled reports of sexual offences including rape and trafficking committed by Fayed before his death.
- More than 400 allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades have surfaced against Fayed, with 154 victims coming forward to report rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking against the former Harrods owner.
- The Met Police confirmed it is assisting the IOPC with the investigation, though the watchdog has yet to determine whether the five officers have a disciplinary case to answer.
- Beyond this specific inquiry, the Metropolitan Police continues investigating individuals who may have facilitated Fayed's offending; three women and a man in his sixties were recently interviewed under caution regarding trafficking and sexual exploitation.
