Act Now: Real ID deadline is May 7
- The Department of Homeland Security will enforce the Real ID deadline on May 7, 2025, requiring compliant IDs or other federal ID for domestic flights and federal facility access.
- The Real ID Act of 2005, passed after the 9/11 Commission recommended setting identification security standards, led to nearly two decades of phased implementation and multiple deadline extensions.
- All 50 states issued Real IDs by 2020 with enhanced security features and documentation standards, but some licenses labeled 'Not for REAL ID purposes' remain in circulation and cannot be used for flights.
- William Connolly, NJMVC spokesperson, said demand for Real IDs is extraordinarily high ahead of enforcement, while Service Oklahoma expanded hours to support applicants, offering evening and weekend appointments.
- The enforcement marks a significant security milestone but ongoing efforts will continue until full compliance is expected by May 2027, with federal agencies no longer accepting non-compliant IDs.
