Serena and Venus Williams speak about their historic return as doubles partners
Serena and Venus Williams fell 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 after their first doubles match together in four years, with Serena calling the comeback fun and special.
On Monday, tennis icons Serena Williams and Venus Williams returned to doubles competition at the Cincinnati Open, marking their first joint appearance in four years at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The combined 30-time Grand Slam title winners fell to Peyton Stearns and Marta Kostyuk in a late tiebreaker, with a final score of 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.
"I didn't come out here to win this tournament," Serena said, while the 46-year-old Venus added they are "getting our stride" together.
Opponents Stearns and Kostyuk expressed honor participating in the historic moment, with Kostyuk noting, "It was just generally special for me because it was my first time playing against either of them."
The Cincinnati Open continues through the week with final matches expected on Sunday, as top-ranked American Jessica Pegula highlighted the significance of sharing the court with the legends.
