Sentencing hearing wraps for B.C. sex trafficker after three-days of arguments
Crown prosecutors sought a 13-year term as the court heard graphic evidence and victim impact statements in the sentencing hearing.
On Wednesday, a three-day sentencing hearing concluded in B.C. Supreme Court for Jennifer Stephens; Justice Terence Schultes is delaying his decision while lawyers meet next week to set a sentencing date.
Stephens pleaded guilty last year to multiple charges including assault causing bodily harm and sex trafficking a person under 18, with court testimony revealing she inflicted violent beatings on victims.
Crown prosecutors proposed a 13-year sentence for the 31-year-old, while defence lawyer Dale Melville requested seven years with credit for time served, disputing whether Stephens was the "mastermind" in the situation.
Melville argued Stephens suffers from intermittent explosive disorder, but Crown counsel Catherine Rose countered the case lacks detailed medical evidence and urged the judge to place "little weight" on the role of others.
Impact statements and graphic videos detailed psychological and physical trauma inflicted on victims, who transferred nearly $63,000 to bank accounts controlled by Stephens between March 2022 and March 2023.
