Plaid Cymru will seek to form minority Welsh government, leader says
Plaid won 43 seats and will seek support to form a government after Labour lost power for the first time since devolution.
Following the 2026 Senedd Election on Friday, Plaid Cymru emerged as the largest party with 43 seats, ending 27 years of Welsh Labour dominance, and leader Rhun ap Iorwerth intends to seek nomination as the next First Minister.
Welsh Labour suffered a historic collapse, securing just nine seats as former First Minister Eluned Morgan lost her constituency seat in Ceredigion Penfro and subsequently resigned as party leader.
In the newly expanded 96-member Senedd, Plaid fell six seats short of an overall majority, while Reform became the second-largest party with 34 MSs.
Seeking to "reach out to others," Iorwerth plans to form a minority government rather than pursue a coalition, as Labour, Liberal Democrats, and Greens have ruled out working with Reform.
