Senate approves more than $180 billion in 2026 funding before August recess
UNITED STATES SENATE, WASHINGTON, D.C., AUG 1 – The Senate approved a bipartisan $180 billion minibus funding three key appropriations bills for fiscal year 2026 to prevent a government shutdown, with over 80 senators voting in favor.
- On Friday, the U.S. Senate approved a minibus containing three of the 12 funding bills and over $180 billion for fiscal year 2026 before its August recess.
- Although Republicans initially planned to advance the annual appropriations bills shortly after the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the introduction of a $9 billion rescissions package caused weeks of delay.
- The first vote passed 87-9, approving the minibus package allocating nearly $900 billion for military construction and Veterans Affairs, $27 billion for agriculture, and $2.2 billion for legislative branch operations.
- Following the vote, Senate Majority Leader Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said, 'we have more work ahead of us, but today we made significant progress toward that goal.'
- Both chambers must pass the same 12 annual funding bills by Oct. 1 to avoid a government shutdown, or they risk lapsing in funding.
